Today 1 December 2021, African Girls Empowerment Network visited the ‘’ OLORUNTOSIN’’ street off idiroko road in Ado-odo Ota LGA,Ogun State as part of our response in Eliminating Violence against women and girls.
The pandemic of violence against women is not new. Even before COVID-19 hit us, globally, 243 million women and girls were abused by their intimate partners in the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the violence, even as support services faltered and accessing help became harder.
Domestic violence takes many forms including physical, sexual, emotional, and mental. Domestic Violence is prominent in every community in Nigeria. There is a deep cultural belief in Nigeria that it is socially acceptable to hit a woman.
We found out today that, domestic violence against women is rampant regardless of their age, tribe, religion or even social status but they find it difficult to speak out because of stigmatization. We need to rise up and fight against domestic violence. Time to speak out! Break the Silence!
